Peter Demakos
He/Him | Psychotherapist Candidate (CICAPP)
All human beings face emotional challenges and difficulties. When children are struggling with their emotions, parents, caregivers and family members feel those struggles too. Psychotherapy is a service that is designed to provide families with support in navigating difficult emotional terrain with the goal of improving overall mental health, well-being
and self esteem.
Services offered
As a psychotherapist candidate, I offer two types of work:
working with parents and young people aged 0-25 in parallel
working with parents separately
After a free 20-min consultation, I typically meet with you and/or your family 3-4 times to gain a better understanding of what has led you to seek psychotherapy. If we decide to proceed with treatment, I will work collaboratively with you and your child, adolescent or young adult to set up a treatment plan. The goal of therapy is to support the expression of feelings. Young people often struggle with the ability to process and understand their own internal experiences. Therapy is a safe place to explore themselves.
In embarking on this work, I draw from a number of evidence based practices that are client-directed. Modalities may incorporate play, talk, crafts and movement.
Parenting is a developmental phase that is often under supported and I also work with parents independently. When navigating the difficult challenges and decisions of parenting, it can be helpful to work with a professional who can offer perspective on how to respond to what is emerging in our children’s development.
About Peter
Along with being a parent myself, I have worked with children for over 15 years. Beginning as a child and youth worker and transitioning to outdoor education, I have worked closely with ECEs, teachers and parents. Since 2019, I have combined my interests in art, nature and working with children to provide nature-themed music programming for children across Canada.
I embarked upon training as a psychotherapist to continue pursuing work that integrates a spirit of creativity and exploration. I see this work as an expansion and new phase in my career of working with children. As a psychotherapist candidate, I receive regular supervision from registered psychotherapists and enjoy learning in an experiential, immersive training environment.
I am pursuing the qualification of registered psychotherapist as a candidate of the Canadian Institute for Child Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (CICAPP). I am a member of the Canadian Group of Psychoanalysts for Children & Adolescents (CAPCT) and received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from the University of Guelph.
I believe an understanding of anti-oppression and intersectionality are critical to the practice of psychotherapy. For me, this means recognizing that systemic barriers, identity and trauma have a profound impact on how we experience the world and the challenges we face.
